Being "lead safe" means that the levels of lead present in an environment, product, or material are within the limits deemed safe by regulatory authorities, thus minimizing the risk of lead poisoning and exposure. Various standards exist to define these safe limits. For instance, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets the lead action level in drinking water at 15 parts per billion (ppb). The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) mandates that lead in children's products must not exceed 100 parts per million (ppm). For paint, the threshold is 0.009% lead by weight. Although some products or materials may contain trace amounts of lead, they are considered lead safe if these levels are sufficiently low and meet regulatory standards. This designation ensures that, under normal use and conditions, the risk of lead exposure and associated health impacts is minimal
